Abstract
Session1 (Instrumentation and observations to quantify the magnitude and distribution of atmospheric optical turbulence.)
Title'The Seeing and Turbulence Profile at Las Campanas Observatory: GMT Site Testing Progress Report'
AbstractWe report preliminary results obtained during the first two years of the GMT site testing campaign at Las Campanas Observatory. Seeing is measured through the use of differential image motion monitors (DIMM) at three potential GMT sites as well as at the Magellan Telescopes for reference purposes. The turbulence profile in the free atmosphere is measured with a multi-aperture scintillation sensor (MASS) also located near the Magellan Telescopes. We examine the contribution to the seeing arising in the ground layer (defined here as below an altitude of 500 m) through the difference between the turbulence integrals in the full atmosphere (as measured by DIMM) and in the free atmosphere (as measured by MASS).
